The OSF programme aims to reduce inequalities and get children and young people (aged 5-16) more active and moving more.
Opening School Facilities (OSF) is a funding programme, provided by the Department for Education to meet the goals of the Government’s School Sport and Activity Action Plan (SSAAP).
The funding supports schools to open-up their facilities, (including swimming pools) by partnering up with local sporting, youth and community organisations to improve physical activity levels and participation in their area.
The programme ensures that all children, young people and the wider community can access inclusive, fun, safe and needs-led co-designed extra-curricular activities outside of curriculum time – particularly in those communities that experience the most significant health, social and economic inequalities.
Rise distributes the funding and supports schools across the North East, targeting those areas and schools who need it most.
The £57m investment into schools runs through to March 2025.
In the second year of the programme (2023-24), Rise has:
- Worked with 68 schools across Northumberland and Tyne and Wear
- Distributed £916,627 funding (£1,786,566 to date since April 2022)
This has led to:
- 4,542 sessions
- 75,178 attendances by participants
- 8,233 attendances by girls
- 6,208 attendances by children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
- 15,418 attendances by community participants
What a difference it [OSF funding] has made this year! We have been able to expand and develop our after-school provision across forest schools, football and gymnastics.
